The year in review, 2016 style

2016, you have done me right. You’ll be remembered by the oh so anticipated television reunions (thanks Netflix for Fuller House, X-files, and Gilmore Girls!), excellent Evil Kermit and laugh out loud worthy Petty Joe Biden memes, “How did they do that?!” mannequin challenges, every adult wanting to slap a child if they flip that bottle one more time, widespread and controversial gorilla mourning (RIP Harambe), an extremely heated presidential election, Pokemon Go! and all the insanity surrounding it, and let’s not forget Chewbacca Mom. Phew! The internet has really outdone itself this year!

In addition to all the world’s ups and downs this year I’ve accomplished so much professionally and personally in the last 365 days! I’m seeing posts all over social media about everyone ready for 2016 to end and hoping for a better 2017. As much as I love a brand new shiny year I am not saying good riddance to 2016 by any means! I had some super tough moments this year, but that doesn’t mean I am hating on it. Here is a recap of my year! Be sure and read to the very end, I swear I saved the best for last!

We made a tiny human!

The absolutely biggest and grandest part of 2016 was the birth of our very first, very handsome baby boy! His name is Greyson and he steals all the shows! He has these huge blue eyes that I get lost in, he learns something new every day, and he is constantly teaching me things. I could go on and on, but I will spare you. Just know- he is always on my feeds, especially Instagram! Don’t believe me? Go check it out for yourself!

Amazing sights!

I have always adored travel. If Teylor and I were situated in the United States we would still seek out the amazing sights we love appreciating so much, but we are so lucky to be seeing Europe! Although this year included less travels than we would have liked (keep reading to see why) we made it to Paris, which is one of my most favorite places on Earth, and now we are frequenting Christmas markets galore! Oh, and the Harry Potter Expo in Brussels? Such a magical day! It’s leviOsa not leviosA!

Forever Fernweh came to be!

It seems fitting to talk about my brand new fine art print shop. Forever Fernweh was born out love for traveling and love for having photographs on my walls of places I have been, and haven’t. I love looking at scenes from far away places. They inspire me! I may not ever go to the place photographed, but I love appreciating beauty from all over the world. So I thought I should share my photographs for people like me that simply love appreciating places they have been, and also haven’t. My hope is they will inspire you too! To check out the print shop head over to Forever Fernweh now!

Photokina 2016

Wow! I have never seen so many people walking, hiding behind their phones, cameras, and Go Pros- simultaneously, of course. It. Was. Incredible. Getting to touch and feel new gear before I made purchases was exactly what I needed. This excursion was extra fun as it was just the boy and me. I have never appreciated our Tula so much! I’m counting down until Photokina 2018! This event educated me so much, and I am able to deliver better quality to YOU! It doesn’t get much more exciting than that.

Exploration

No, I didn’t go to space. But I did explore some new creative outlets and am loving them! I photographed three homecomings and it was phenomenal. I had never been to a homecoming before, much less photographed one. I am so happy and honored to do it though! There are very few moments when that much emotion and longing is completely released… and it’s incredible that those families have photographs of that memory. It all goes by so fast in those few moments you want photographs to celebrate it, promise.

alicia-yarrish-photography-lifestyle-newborn

I started offering birth sessions AND lifestyle newborn sessions! Having a baby really ignited my passion in this area and made me realize the importance of having those memories captured. I now offer these sessions for you because I cannot imagine where I would be without lifestyle documentation of my son at 1 month, and I wish I would have had the hindsight to hire a photographer for his birth. I will not be making that mistake for baby #2! You live you learn, but I am here for you so you don’t have to make my mistake.

2016-alicia-yarrish-photography-boudoir

Boudoir! Where do I start? I wanted to start an experience just for women that would make them the center of attention and feel great about themselves. I actually wrote an entire post about why I now offer these sessions. So instead of me reinventing the wheel go read about it here! It’s worth a read!

I found my car jam!

I was getting really sad about listening to music in the car. That sounds insane, trust me, I know. With this new babe I just don’t get much time to myself to think, and I felt like listening to music was doing my car ‘alone’ time an injustice. So I found my new car jams- podcasts! Man, oh man, where have these been all my life!? I discovered I love listening to business centered podcasts! I feel boss if I already know about the subject, even still it makes me dig deeper, or hearing something I haven’t heard of before that could benefit me! Being Boss, The Goal Digger, Girl Boss, TED Talks, The Creative Empire, The Art of Charm… I could go on forever.

My very 1st feature

One of my favorite boudoir inspiration blogs, Boudoir Collective, featured my very first boudoir shoot! I feel so #blessed to be among such great photographers on the blog! Check out my feature here, and seriously, just scroll through all their features- you will be happy you did!

Deployment Numero Uno

2016-homecoming-military-alicia-yarrish-photography

It was a tough six months, but we made it, and we are stronger for it! Teylor went on his first deployment with the Air Force, and unfortunately he missed some big life events, but we were so so lucky to remain in touch- thank you FaceTime- throughout the entire separation. It’s seriously so amazing to have him back and our little family united! This is the reason our travels were less this year, but no worries we plan to make up for it in 2017!

And I saved the best for last… YOU!

My amazing clients

2016-alicia-yarrish-photography-family-session

I have made so many new friends! I have built a relationship with you that I might not have otherwise because of AYP! I promise you, you have no idea how much joy it brings me and how happy and giddy I get thinking about it! These relationships are such a huge part of my why. I love capturing your memories and creating tangible heirlooms for you, but I also love remaining here for you as a professional- and as a friend! Without you I would not have a business. Thank you for allowing me to go into the most private place, your lives, and showing me glimpses to photograph. Thank you for spreading the word of what I do and how I love doing it so I get the opportunity to start more relationships and meet more lovelies. Thank you for letting me grow as a photographer and as a creative being. Thank you for making Alicia Yarrish Photography and Forever Fernweh happen!

To 2017 and beyond!

Teylor and I have so much planned for 2017. So certainly stay tuned!

I always encourage reflection, and often. Not just when a year is ending! What is something you are super proud of or happy about that happened in 2016? Let me know- I love hearing from y’all!
