I say it all the time, location is everything. This family knew the perfect place for their lifestyle session- Bernkastel, Germany! It’s one of my favorite towns in Germany. It’s right on the Mosel, has an amazing wine fest every year, is home to one of our favorite restaurants- Taj Mahal, and puts on an excellent Weihnachtsmarkt each year.
So obviously, I was pretty excited when Heather told me I was going to have the opportunity to be a Bernkastel photographer for a morning!
When you reserve your destination session with me you’ll learn that we have to avoid the tourists that get out early. Thanks, tour buses. To avoid the crowds, and get great light, we get out early in the Spring and Summer. I was super impressed with these two boys being so ready for photos so early!
Do these streets seem familiar? Alex and Melanie’s engagement portraits were in Bernkastel! However, they were in the Fall so the landscape is a tad different. No matter the season, I’m always excited to photograph sessions in Bernkastel. It’s a beautiful town!
Since I’ve photographed multiple sessions here now I thought it might be fun to throw some more information about the town your way!
Bernkastel-Kues is the most popular town in what’s called the ‘Middle Mosel’. It’s famous for it’s vineyards- allΒ 14440 acres of them! The most popular is Riesling, but they also grow grapes for other varieties of wines as well.
The city is home to the ruins of the Castle of Landshut. Built in 1277, it caught fire in the 1600s and was never rebuilt. Like most castles, it was built on the highest hill of the town for defensive reasons. Now, it provides an amazing look out onto the city of Bernkastel-Kues and the Moselle.

you make me want to hop on a plane fly to Germany and book lifestyle portraits right now! These are beautiful, the family, the scenery, the houses!!! Love them all
Sarah, you’re so sweet! Let me know if you make you’re way over! I’d love to connect π
I just loved Germany! It would be such an amazing opportunity to photograph a family in Europe! This is my dream! So many places to explore and to have fun!
Next time you come back connect with an American that is traveling! SO many Americans come to Europe each year! π
I agree with you, location is everything! For me it’s #3 important thing. And great job with this session!
Completely agree π Light might be a little higher than location for me π Thanks, Jan!
What a lovely family session. It looks like such a cute town in Germany! Well done with these images.
This family session is one of the best I have seen! Beautiful photos and location, reminds me of my time in Salzburg (quite close to Germany) π
Such a stunning family session! Your tones are so lovely and full of light!
This family is amazing! I love the colorful sling that she is using to carry her baby. It actually worked so well with the location. How cool that you get to be a destination photographer in places like this!
What a lovely family session! You must love being a destination photographer. We are thinking about hitting up Oktoberfest in Germany this year.
If you want a table get tickets now! They are hard to come by! I went to Munich last year for a session while Oktoberfest was going on, but decided not to go because it seemed a little too crazy for me, lol
