Our Black Forest Family Vacation | Itinerary and Tips from our Black Forest, Germany Trip | Schwarzwald, Germany | Alicia Yarrish Photography | European Destination Wedding & Anniversary Photographer

When you have a four day weekend you book a trip! This past extended weekend we packed our bags and headed south and found ourselves on a Black Forest family vacation! It was a seriously fun time and the Schwarzwald region has such beautiful sweeping views and forests.

Yesterday was Memorial Day. So I won’t go any further until I acknowledge the why behind the four day weekend. So many men and women have given their lives serving our country and ensuring that America remains the great nation that gives us so many freedoms and rights. So many have lost their parents, siblings, children, and friends fighting for the United States of America.

While it doesn’t seem quite right to say “Happy Memorial Day” or get caught up in shopping and sales it does seem right to hold my service member a little closer and be appreciative I still have him while so many others have lost their loved ones. It does seem right to celebrate the lives lost and be grateful for their choice to serve their country.
So with that in mind we went out of town for some family time!

Our Black Forest Family Vacation Itinerary

Day 1: Driving to Schwarzwald & Exploring

– Drove to Gengenbach stopping in Baden Baden for lunch

– Explored the adorable town of Gengenbach and grabbed dinner and a gelato (which quickly became a daily ‘tradition’ for vacations!)

Day 2: Clock Shop & Sightsee

– Drive from Gengenbach to Triberg stopping along the way at House of Black Forest Clocks, House of 1000 Clocks, and Eble Uhren-Park to see the worlds largest cuckoo clock

– Have lunch in Triberg

– Hike to the Triberg Waterfall

– Go to the master clock shops: Kuckucknest and Oli’s

– Head back to Gengenbach stopping along the way for dinner or have dinner in Gengenbach!

Day 3: Hiking & Freiburg

– Wake up bright and early and head to a lake of your choice! We went to Lake Titisee to hike around, but there are so many options depending on the level difficulty hike and length of time you want to do!

– Get to Lake Titisee and start hiking! (Our last hiking excursion was a few weeks ago so we were beyond ready!)

– After hike either get lunch in Titisee, or in Freiburg if you’re not starving

– Drive to Freiburg (this was 30ish minutes for us from Lake Titisee)

– Walk around and get to know the city. We loved the UC Cafe for lunch!

– After seeing all the sights head back to Gengenbach for a easy baguette and gelato dinner

Day 4: The return trip

– Pack up, head out, and drive out of the forest!

– If you’re heading north from Gengenbach hop on the Schwarzwald Hochstrasse all the way to Baden Baden for some incredible views and non autobahn forest driving

– We stopped in Baden Baden for a few hours and explored a different part of the city than when we stopped on Day 1. We found the ‘Casino’ parking to be the easiest.

My Black Forest Family Vacation Tips

Cuckoo Clock Tips

Before our trip, I mapped out clock shops to stop at. However, it’s impossible to know where you want to buy until you meet the people behind the shops. We chose to get our lower costing souvenirs from the above mentioned tourist shops and reserved our ‘forever clock’ for the masters.

It was really important to me to find a shop that made their clocks personally, used materials from the Black Forest, and tells stories with their clocks.

We went to Oli’s in Triberg expecting to purchase there, but when we stumbled into Kuckucknest we instantly knew they were who we wanted to buy from! Not only did Katja and her husband have beautiful clocks and clearly expert level craftsmanship they also took the time to explain so much about their clocks to us (and to Grey!).

They were patient with us while we were long distance clock shopping with my Grandparents via FaceTime (how great is technology, y’all?!). In the end, the best option was a custom clock and the owners showed me how it would be built, and what all the options were. Basically, they were amazing! We highly recommend going to their shop- Kuckucknest in Triberg!

BnB Tips in the Black Forest

We adored Anja, out BnB host in Gengenbach! She was so knowledgeable about the area and every morning over breakfast would answer all of our questions. Anja had great suggestions about places to go and see as well as practical advice like where to park.

I book nearly all my travel through Booking.com, whether business or personal. I was seriously pleased to book Schwarzwald Villa through the site. We not only had a great experience with Anja, we were able to get free passes to the pool walking distance from the house. It was actually more like 5 pools together in a ‘park’. Such a nice activity for an evening! Oh, and not to mention her amazing breakfast each morning!

To book Schwarzwald Villa for your black forest family vacation just click here (it would also be the perfect spot for couples!). The above link will also get you 10% off your next booking! Win-win.

We loved the town of Gengenbach. It’s a picturesque town with a rich history and a geographical oddity as it’s 55 minutes from everything! That might sound like a ‘negative’, but it’s amazing. We had the opportunity to stop and see so much on the way to the two towns 55 minutes away (Triberg and Freiburg). It was perfect. We loved seeing the homes and having options to stop along the way.

Oh my word, this post brings back so many memories! My sister was stationed at an airbase years ago, and while I was a kid, I would visit her and a lot of the locations you mentioned above. You are so lucky to live here. I’d love to visit it once again!
