5 Reasons Why You Need a Business Bestie | Alicia Yarrish Photography

Brittany of Brittany Brooke Photography

You’ve heard me mention Brittany several times throughout my journal here at AYP! She’s one of my very best friends, an amazing wife and fur momma, an incredibly talented newborn photographer, my business bestie, and just a really great human! I feel truly lucky to have met her.

Being military spouses, there are so many moves and shifts that to meet your great friends you have to be at the right place at the right time. I know spouses that talk about how many years of military living it took to find their best, best friends. Sometimes I joke about needing to have Brittany in my life before I did, but really, she came into my life at the perfect time!

And an added bonus? She’s such a great business woman! I love that I can chat with Brittany about Grey smacking me in the face with a waffle (just add that to the list of things I thought I’d never say) and I can chat with her about my marketing plans! For better or for worse, this beautiful lady knows me inside and out.

What’s a Business Bestie?

I don’t think Merriam-Webster has quite defined this one for us yet. Here’s the Alicia Yarrish definition: Someone who is deeply rooted in your life, mutually cares to nurture your success, and is unbiased and removed from your personal finance situations.

Let’s take Brittany as an example, she’s a genuine friend and she’s not going anywhere! She’s deeply rooted in my life and I in hers. We care about each other’s well being, mental sanity, and caffeination status. She cares to nurture my business success, and I want her to succeed too! It’s mutual. We want great success for each other and believe that we can help each other get our businesses exactly where we want them to be! Brittany doesn’t make purchases from my bank account. Neither am I responsible to feed her or house her. That ensures that she is pretty unbiased when it comes to business decisions! Sometimes it’s difficult to make business decisions that are a little too personal- enter Brittany. She can set me straight in a heartbeat, and frequently does.

Why have a Business Bestie?

1. Encouragement, support, and high fives!

Sometimes your husband looks at you funny when you say things like, “My click rate on my last email campaign was over the industry standard!” (He says sorry usually… with his voice going up question mark style at the end.) Your business bestie will know exactly what you mean and proceed to high five you! Bonus- I know that Brittany will be the first to comment on basically anything I post and I comment on all her work and content! It’s nice to see a familiar face in the comments AND you can never say, “Oh my goodness no one commented! How embarrassing!”

2. Talk about expenses!

I think BIG business expenses need to ran by your significant other. That’s probably an unpopular opinion, but that’s how it works in my house. Other expenses? Hubby Tey might be a little biased or not truly able to give me an educated opinion about it. Not because our spouses aren’t geniuses! Because they aren’t in the creative space every day. Brittany, my business bestie, IS. She’s working in the same industry I am so I value her opinion and it’s great to chat with her about expenses that I’m not completely sold on or want to make sure is the right move for my business to reach my goals.

3. Work through the lows, together.

Sometimes entrepreneurship can be a lonely gig. Having a bestie that’s also going through that makes two worlds of difference, yeah, two. I can chat about it with Teylor all day long, but he can’t help me talk through that like Brittany can. He can encourage me which is always nice, but a business bestie knows and has experienced the lows. And bonus- because when you have a business bestie the lows are few and far between! It’s a win-win!

4. Educate one another!

Brittany is a seriously good wordsmith. I’m great with numbers. We are both good at strategizing and have different ideas and perspectives on it. So together? We kinda rock at business! I’m not great at everything, nor will I ever be. I ask Brittany to proofread things for me all the time because I don’t consider myself a strong writer. Brittany runs numbers by me frequently because when she overthinks it she gets all turned around (although more often than not she had it in the first place!). We balance each other and even though our businesses are separate we are a very much needed opinion. We love helping each other out! Remember? We both want to see each other succeed!

5. Accountability!

Oh man, It’s one thing to write your goals down in a notebook and hide them in a drawer. Another thing entirely to tell your business bestie because they will ask you frequently about your progress on that goal. It’s great! A business bestie provides you with an intense layer of accountability to help you reach your goals. They are also there to celebrate with you when you hit those goals out of the park!

BONUS!

They are invested in your business, and you get to return that! Brittany randomly texts or voice messages me when she has an idea for MY business. Let that sink in, I don’t prompt her and I didn’t ask specifically. She just had an idea randomly and wanted to let me know because she thinks it could help me reach my business goals. Brittany has my back constantly- she’s a real bestie, far beyond business bestie. That’s the bonus! You gain a life friend who is always there for you in ways you probably couldn’t even imagine!
