Three Questions to Help Choose Your Engagement Session Location by Houston Wedding Photographer Alicia Yarrish Photography

He did it! He asked you to spend the rest of your lives together- and you said YES! Your heart was probably beating a million miles a minute and you might have had about a million mixed feelings. You were probably ecstatic, shocked, maybe a little queasy from all the excitement, but most of all- blissfully in love!

Then for weeks, you stare at your hand more specifically at your newest addition to your left hand. And even while you are still embracing the newest part of your lives together, you start planning. People begin to ask you all these questions about your engagement celebration and wedding!

So many brides tell me that the things they had to plan were more in-depth than they ever could have dreamt. Wedding planning isn’t easy! There are so many decisions to be made. Some decisions are huge, some are small, and luckily some can be delegated.

There are a few decisions to be made through that are highly personal, and yes I’m talking more personal than cake taste preferences. You’ve heard the phrase “location location location”? It truly means everything! Your getting ready location, ceremony location, reception location, and honeymoon location. All of those locations are places you’ll remember for the rest of your lives!

I know you want those locations to be special, and your engagement session is no different.

How to start choosing your engagement session location

1. Create meaning

Think of a type of place that has been integral or extra meaningful in your relationship. Where was your first date? Do you always go to baseball games? Where do you two feel most at ease and in tune with each other? These questions will give you a great idea where one of your engagement session locations should be!

2. Aesthetic Preference

Is there a type of ‘backdrop’ you and your fiancé are drawn to? Do you love the architecture of your city? Are y’all always going picnicking at a certain park? Does the water call you two like Moana?

3. Think Seasons

The time of year! Seasons change and so do locations. If you’re sold on a certain location it’s worth it to consider when it looks best. If you two have determined a season you’d like to photograph your engagement portraits in think about what locations are at their peak that time of year!

Choosing Your Houston Engagement Session Location

1. Let’s chat! It might take a bit of thinking, but after you and your man come to some decisions regarding the above questions- email me. Then we will continue the conversation on what location will be best for you two!

2. After working together and determining your perfect engagement session location (or two!) I will help guide you through the process if there are any permits to be obtained. Luckily the fees associated with these permits are often minimal and not all locations require permits.

3. Picking a time! This may seem like an easy task, and it truly is, but it may require an early alarm depending on the locations. If it’s a tourist spot we will want to consider what time will have the least foot traffic. Mostly the answer to that will be at sunrise. Sunrise session yields amazing pink and blue skies and we usually have the location all to ourselves!

Have FUN with your engagement session location!

I’ve already mentioned the importance of this decision, but I haven’t mentioned how FUN it is! You get to think through all the things you’ve done and places you’ve experienced as a couple. Then we have the opportunity to discuss options together and how the session will go.

I’m a tad bit biased, but I think it’s one of the most fun decisions you will make throughout your wedding planning process!

Alicia! I love this! A lot of brides rely on us to pick a spot for them and I’d love to have my brides chose a meaningful spot! Now, I’ve had a scary time with that as well! One of my couples went to a grassy area in the summer and thought it would look the same in winter, we were sad by the fact that everything was dead. Great advice!

  10. Alicia Yarrish

    January 30th, 2018 at 9:24 am

Seasons- why do they betray us sometimes!? I hate that your couple didn’t get the grassy area they wanted! And it’s so true, and while we DO have a ton of locations up our sleeves I’d so much rather it be a meaningful place to the couple. And then we can supplement one location for diversity! Thanks Marie, you know I always love hearing from you <3

Aww I wish I could have helped you then! These are definitely things you don’t think about (ya know, wedding planning already takes 110% of your brain). Thanks so much for chiming in, Aubrey- I love hearing from everyone!

Great tips for choosing an engagement session location! We picked a park near where we lived and it’s special to look back at that time when we lived in a hustling bustling city (now that we’re in the ‘burbs with kids and dogs).

  14. Alicia Yarrish

    January 30th, 2018 at 9:22 am

I love that! Thanks so much for sharing your story, Meghan! It’s so so true- especially after having kids. You really appreciate those ‘just the two of you’ portraits in a place that was so meaningful to you! I’m in the same boat 😉
