Family Session Outfits Guide by Houston Family Photographer Alicia Yarrish Photography for your Houston Family Session

1. Consider Your Home Decor

Um, what, Alicia? You heard right! The style of your home decor and the colors you love say a lot! They give you a direction as to what style and color palette you should use to plan your Houston family session outfits. If you gravitate towards modern decor, you’ll probably inherently go for Zara clothing or something similar. Likewise, if your home is filled with boho vibes you might shop at Anthropologie.

I love using stores like Zara and Anthro as an example because they also have home divisions of their companies. That’s just extra proof that clothes and home decor are closely intertwined.

Not only that, but you want to hang canvases or beautiful framed wall galleries in your home, right? That means you’ll want your outfits to flow with the rest of your decor. Because your displayed photographs become home decor you’ll want to treat them like a curation, just like art!

2. Color Story Stores

It makes my heart happy that lots of stores offer color collections! Have you ever seen The Devil Wears Prada? Meryl Streep explains that everything that happens in couture sets the stage for all the other stores and even trickles down to discount fashion stores. I realize the movie is fiction, however I convinced that is true!

J. Crew and Gap are my favorite examples of this concept. They have various pieces in a staple color and you’ll find the same shades for the season across all their clothes. No clashing colors! Bonus points that these two stores sell clothing and accessories for women, men, and kids!

The one downside to this shopping trip? If you don’t like that seasons ‘big’ colors (you know, the ones that trickled down from couture designers) it might be hard to find a exact color match across many stores. If you aren’t using color stories from one brand definitely take the clothing you’ve already purchased to the next store to color match!

3. Coordinating, not matching

Nine times out of ten coordinating is way better than perfectly matching for your family session outfits. The one exception? Twins or closely aged younger kiddos wearing a matching outfit- that’s adorable. Even in that one exception, you should not match your own outfit to your kiddos perfectly.

The coordinating, not matching concept can be applied to colors as well as patterns. If hubby is wearing navy pants and the tinies have an accent color of navy in their outfits, you might want to try a navy cardigan or blazer! For patterns if that navy accent on your kiddos is within a pattern you might want to have a solid color on to balance their patterns. Or if the kiddos are in solids, hubby or you might want a pattern to break things up.

If you’re a little lost with this one, never fear, tip number 15 is for you!

4. Consider the Season

Think of the season we’re photographing your Houston family session. Because that will help you to know what colors you should be sporting as well as how many layers! Sometimes we prioritize a look we love over function during a photo session (guilty!). However, when you are cold- it shows. You’ll be to uncomfortable to truly enjoy our time together and get those ultra genuine photos I love delivering. It doesn’t help that we Houstonians don’t know *how* to dress for the cold in a way we think looks great. A little research on Pinterest will go a long way for your family session outfits!

5. Keep Comfort in Mind

You don’t have to show up in your pajamas, and shouldn’t. 😉 However, if you don’t feel comfortable in the outfit that you’re wearing it will show in your photos. Plus, who wants the constant worry if something is ‘doing right’ or ‘looking good’? I hate how spaghetti straps look on me and they constantly fall down for me. So that’s a fashion I will never wear for family session outfits. It wouldn’t be an enjoyable process for me.

Photos are not a time to test out if you feel comfortable in an outfit or not. Here’s a good test, if you wear your session outfit to the mall- what happens? If your mind is filled with (probably un-true) self conscious worries or you’re constantly readjusting or fixing part of your clothing… It’s a no go for photos. Trust me- it sounds harsh, but you won’t like the images nearly as much as if you were truly comfortable.

5. Say No to Graphic Tees

This will be the shortest of the fifteen tips for your Houston family session outfits. Don’t wear graphic tees. Additionally, they don’t photograph well and are too casual.

6. Match Your Fancy

Flowing from the last tip, if you’re wearing a ball gown for your family photos make sure hubby is in a suit or tux and get the littles a bowtie! My recommendation is to wear business casual or fancier for your family session outfits.

7. Accessorize!

Some people feel like they should put their signature accessory down for the photos, but I believe in the opposite! If your go to fashion statement is an armful of bangles- rock it during your session. Always have the best headband? Girl, put one on! If you love a statement necklace- go all out! Represent yourself and your personalities well during your photos.

8. A Classic Never Goes Out of Style

Why do I still watch Gone With the Wind? Because it’s a wildly romantic classic and I might have a slight crush on Clark Gable. Why do I still wear blazers? First off, because I love them. Secondly, because they are so classic and I never fear having one on for photos. Dress your family in outfits you’ll still want hanging on the wall 10 years from now.

9. Location, Location, Location

If we’re photographing your family in the bluebonnets the exact shade of bluebonnet blue might not be the best choice for your outfits. However, light blue and white could be a great option. This concept is better left to your eye and less of a description from me. Because if you are wondering if a color will fight a location, it probably will. And again, tip number 15 perfect to help you when planning your Houston family session outfits!

10. Leave the Favorite Characters at Home

I know, I know- this might break your kiddos heart. Sadly, Puppy Dog Pals and Paw Patrol (can you tell we like puppies in our house?) don’t photograph well. They are highly distracting your family photos. You might not even realize it, but chances are what you love about family photos is their cohesiveness. Unfortunately, that is lost when you bring in graphic tees and character clothing. Sorry, toddler friends!

11. Layering Your Outfits

Layers just photograph beautifully. I cannot tell you why, but they do. In the Spring, Fall, and Winter months take advantage of that with your outfits! Layers can also be brought in Summer, but I’m realistic- Houston is hot! You’ll probably want to take a less is more approach for you Houston family session and consider lighter clothing as well as dresses and skirts, and shorts for the boys.

12. Don’t Forget Your Shoes

Sometimes almost out of habit we put on our “outside shoes” and walk out the door. You know the ones, the grungy, probably need a bath, shoes. Definitely consider our location when you make your shoe selection, but also keep the color scheme and fancy level in mind.

13. Start With Your Outfit First

I could go into how this is an ‘oxygen first’ mentality. More accurately though- we as Moms are the most picky, we are the ones orchestrating the entire session, and we need to start with our outfit. Once your outfit is set, you love it and feel great in it, then you shop for the family.

14. Keep the colors subdued

Neon or florescent colors tend to loose a lot of detail in photos and in general, do not photograph well for our purpose. The one to two colors you do focus on for your Houston family session should be lighter, more subdued. Even potent pastels don’t look great on the camera. Again, it can cause a big distraction. Better safe than sorry- avoid ’em!

15. Let’s plan your Family Session Outfits!
