5 Reasons to Have a First Look | Paris Wedding | Alicia Yarrish Photography

The First Look

Your wedding day is just that, yours. You’ve planned months upon months for this special weekend filled with rehearsals, flying-in family, pre-wedding spa sessions, and the big event itself. You’ve done your homework, hiring all the right professionals to ensure your day runs smoothly. You’ve found the perfect dress.

And most importantly, you are committing yourself to the person that you vow to love for the rest of your life!

When it comes time to finalize the timeline for your big day with your wedding planner there are SO many things to consider. My couples know that in order to get my signature couple’s portraits they need to make it a priority in the timeline! (Don’t worry, plenty of options in your AYP Wedding Experience Guide)

One of the best moments on a wedding day is a First Look. Making time for more intimate portraits is a number one priority on my couples wedding day.

So what is it, Alicia? The First Look is a beautiful moment between you and your soon to be Husband. The wedding day is busy. From sun up to sundown, there is little time to stop and truly appreciate the amazing commitment the two of you are about to make. Just like any schedule, you have to find time to stop, rest, and appreciate.

Before you walk down the aisle take a moment for your very soon to be husband to see you for the first time. See his reaction and be able to respond one on one with him. And have photographs to remember that perfect moment!

1. Share a private moment

Seeing each other the first time on your wedding day is monumental. The First Look allows you to see each other, and act on your emotions! It gives you the intimacy and freedom to appreciate the commitment you are about to make.

2. Gift each other the sense of calm

You don’t need me to tell you this, but wedding days can be stressful, but don’t have to be! By planning a great timeline and scheduling in moments away with your love you are setting yourself up for success. Being with each other without an audience will naturally calm your nerves and prepare you for the ceremony and reception!

3. The Value

Craft a timeline that allows for what you value most. With The First Look, you’ll not only receive more photos in your wedding gallery (up to 40% more!), but you will also be alleviating a stressful ‘crunch time’ during bridal party photos.

4. Enjoy cocktail hour and your guests

This plays into that timeline again! It’s cocktail hour and bride and groom portraits have already been photographed! At that time, you and your husband will be free to join your wedding guests earlier than expected. It will be such a nice surprise to your guests who can’t wait to congratulate the newlyweds!

5. Choose the location!

Your First Look photos are for the walls, the desk frame, and to gift to parents. Together, we are able to choose the location at your venue to create beautiful, intimate portraits. With The First Look, we have total control of setting the perfect scene for you to take his breath away.

BONUS: The First Look does not diminish your grand entrance. After you share your private moment together you’ll be whisked away for final touches. When your betrothed sees you walking down the aisle you will still take his breath away.

Convinced you’ve gotta have a First Look? Email me and let’s chat about it!

  1. Cassie says:

Alicia, I couldn’t agree more!! I am so glad my hubby & I decided to go this route! This allowed us to enjoy more of the day together instead of hiding from each other all day. I definitely would recommend doing a first look to anybody who is on the fence! It was just as emotional walking down the aisle even though we had already seen each other, but instead we were able to cherish the moment and that’s something I wouldn’t change for the world.

    • Reading your comment made my heart so so happy! You hit the nail on the head with “instead of hiding from each other all day”- I feel like that’s the exact opposite of what you should be doing on your wedding day! Thanks so much for chiming in, Cassie!

  2. Joy says:

Goodness! I could not agree more! I wish I had done this on my wedding T_T.

  3. Emma Rose says:

I love First Looks, this is a great post! I need to put together a First Look post on my blog soon, too! 95% of my brides opt for a first look which is so wonderful! When I got married I thought for sure I did not want Shaun to see me before walking down the aisle but then our photographer explained the First Look to us and we were like OH YEA – WE NEED THAT. Haha so glad we did one!

    • I’m so happy you took your photographers advice! Isn’t it the best? I love hearing from photographers that weren’t photographers when they were married and what their experience with the first look was!
