We’re hanging out in Rome this week which some people consider the most romantic city in the world. Obviously, I’d argue and say Paris holds that title, but none the less Rome inspired me to write about my love at first sight experience and how I met Teylor!
Ever heard of Circuit City? Yep, the now dead and gone electronics store. I was a junior and he was a senior. I was in sales (I sold cameras of course) and he brought out products from the warehouse- although I’m sure he would argue that his job was much more extensive. He had Bieber hair before it was Bieber hair, and I totally dug it.
I thought he was so cool, calm, and collected while I felt like a ball of nerves at all times around him. So I avoided him and looked from afar. Creepy, I know, but it didn’t last long.
Customer service made a list of impulse buy sodas every night for the warehouse guys to restock. I had overheard on the headset that it was Teylor’s turn. Earlier I had been pulled from my camera corner to help in customer service. It was perfect. Finally, after months of working alongside him, I had the opportunity to make my move. I was pumped up about it and had all the confidence in the world. I nearly fought the other girls behind the customer service counter to be sure I was the one to make the list.
I made the list like a pro- I used my best handwriting, a pink sticky note (you know, the color of love), and I was going to hand it to him just as I finished it up instead of leaving it on the soda case door for him to find. I handed it to him proudly without saying anything. He looked it over and said, “What’s Sprit?”. The first words from the guy I knew I loved before even talking to him were- “What’s Sprit”. I died a little (a lot) on the inside. Honestly, I have no clue what I said back, but I had a ‘what are you talking about’ look my face. He finally said, “Do you mean Sprite? You don’t know how to spell Sprite, ha”.
So that was it. I’m not exactly sure what my grand plan was for when I made my move, but it certainly wasn’t to misspell Sprite. Needless to say, in our house “Sprit” is a common joke. And after that anticlimactic conversation, we talked lots and it wasn’t a big to do anymore. I figured I couldn’t embarrass myself much more.
We stayed close friends, started dating a year later and then got married many more years down the road. All of that is for another day, but it being Valentine’s Day and with us in Rome I thought I’d share how I met my sweet husband!
