Flawless skincare on your wedding day | Photographed by Houston Wedding Photographer Alicia Yarrish Photography | Hair and Makeup by Rouged and Radiant Beauty Co

It’s no secret that having great skin can feel like a myth that just needs to be debunked. However, there are some real steps you can take to ensure that perfect wedding day glow! Promise-promise. As I’m sure your esthetician will confirm- great skin doesn’t happen overnight.

How to Have Great Skin on Your Wedding Day

Curate Your Skincare Routine

This sounds silly, but it’s true! Sometimes it can take some trial and error to determine what products work best on your skin. Or even which products work in general. It can take months for your skin to ‘get used to’ a product so you won’t want to start a new skincare product anytime near your wedding date. Start the trial and error process as far from your wedding date as possible. Once you find the winning routine, at least a month prior to your big day, stick with it and don’t add or change any products.

To get the professionals opinion on your bride-to-be skincare routine I chatted with Bare Necessities in Houston! Here’s what they had to say:

“Starting and ending the day with a gentle cleanser is so important. We’re big fans of Eminence Organics Coconut Milk Cleanser. Follow up with a routine that includes sunscreen, a hydrating serum (we love Eminence Organics Stone Crop Serum) and finish off with a moisturizer before you head out for the day.

Dry brushing 2-3 times a week is also a wonderful way to rev up your lymphs and clear out toxins in your system while also exfoliating. Add in a brightening mask once a week and you’ll be walking down the aisle as radiant as ever.”

Enjoy a Facial, or Two

For best results, consistency is key. Some women like to get a monthly facial regardless of big events coming up and it certainly shows. If you’re on a time crunch though get a facial a month or so out from your wedding. Then another facial just a week before.

Ideally though, “at least six months before the big day make an appointment with an esthetician to discuss your skin goals so they can create a personalized plan for you. Usually, we recommend coming in for a facial every 2-4 weeks depending if any corrective treatments are necessary like acne, tissue scarring, sun damage, etc. You want your skin to have enough time to heal as redness and peeling can occur for a few days post-facial.”

There are about a million different types of facials from deep cleaning to plump up any fine lines you may have. Chat with a professional about which would benefit you most for your skin type and desired result.

Say Bye to Sugar

While not eating a sugary snack might not sound like a skincare treatment it truly is! As a whole, Americans eat a significant higher amount of sugar than is recommended by doctors. This has a lot of negative health effects, but the most visible? Our skin! Sugar can cause acne to be much worse and even cause breakouts on the most perfect of skin. Sugar can also cause visible puffiness (inflammation at the cellular level).

Again, the longer you cut out sugar the better for more health reasons than just your skin. Not to worry though you can see results of clearer skin in as little as a week. I suggest eating super clean non processed or sugary foods for at least two weeks prior to your wedding.

Treat Your Lips

Your lips are a big part of your overall wedding look and should be in your pre wedding skincare routine! You don’t want deal with flaky or dry lips while you’re trying to get your dance on. The night before your big day apply a lip scrub or lip mask. This simple skin treatment will slough off any dead skin on your lips. Additionally, the scrub will give your lips a more plump full look!

Exfoliate Your Skin

You’ll get lots of great exfoliation and moisture masks during your facials, but don’t forget about the rest of your body! Likely your wedding dress will show your chest, arms, and back. You’re get away dress might even show off those legs! Plus, you’ll want a silky smooth body for your honeymoon.

Be sure you’re taking time to exfoliate in the shower with a dry brush to slough away those lingering dead skin cells. As an alternative, you can utilize a scrub that will exfoliate your skin while retaining moisture.

Hydrate, and then Hydrate Some More

It’s difficult to get the recommended amount of water in per day. I get it- we’re all busy and well, just forget. I hate to say it, but there are apps for that! There’s no shame in needing a reminder or a tracking application on your phone to keep you accountable for your water intake. Just be sure you’re getting at least 8 glasses of water per day, at least 8 ounces each.

Water is such a necessity for our skin to get that glowing hydrated look. But it doesn’t happen overnight. Be sure you’re drinking more than enough water a few weeks prior and up until your wedding day.

Bare Necessities

A huge thank you to Bare Necessities for not only being an amazing spa, but also for taking the time to give some great pre wedding skincare tips! Their number one tip for brides?

“Listen to the professionals and don’t go overboard with trying new products. Keeping your skincare routine consistent and in line with the plan that your esthetician mapped out is so important if you want to avoid a surprise flare-up. Let’s keep that forehead pimple off the guest list!
