Why Wedding Photography is a Necessity | Alicia Yarrish Photography | French Wedding Photographer

Why I’m Writing, Why it’s Hard, Why You Need to Hear it

After our in person or video consultation, you know how up front I am. I strive to be honest, loyal, and transparent about what I do, how I do it, and how amazing you’ll feel about all of it! My clients? We click. If we’d met organically at a dinner party we would be friends. My couples understand how important wedding photography is. They know that quality wedding photography is a necessity for them!

I’ve delved into mentoring creative small business owners specifically on their business finances and how to use that as the foundation of their business to be profitable and successful. Here comes the hard part. I tell business owners often, “You have to remember that the service or product you provide is a luxury, not a necessity.” I prompt them to truly question whether what they are providing is a true necessity or simply a luxury item.

So now I’m practicing what I preach- which is hard! My clients know that having excellent quality photographs from their wedding day is an absolute must! However, this blog post is for the couples questioning, “Do I really need to invest in a quality photographer that has experience?” Or the ones thinking, “I think I’ll give a camera to my cousin to take photos. She said she likes taking pictures and wouldn’t mind!”

Even though, I believe wholeheartedly that my readers, my audience, and my clients value their wedding photography in a huge way. It would be a disservice to the internet if I didn’t write this blog post. I would feel like I didn’t completely do my part! I’m all for education- I want to put as much of my knowledge out there that I possibly can! Otherwise, I would feel guilty.

Doing My Part to Answer The Question

In fact, I have felt guilty in the past. Brides have told me so many times that they’ve regretted not spending more on their photographer. They regret not investing in a quality photographer that could be relied on to deliver photographs that would not only bring them back to their wedding day but would tell their future generations their story.

Realistically, I shouldn’t feel guilty because I didn’t know them previously! But what if they Googled the question, “do I really need a wedding photographer” and the true answer didn’t come up? This blog post might never come up with that search! But I’ve got to try. I’ve got to try and educate the couples asking themselves that question that they DO really need a wedding photographer.

You may feel it in my writing, but this is a hard post for me to write– It’s such a tough subject. A lot goes into weddings- the budget, the planning and the millions of things that go into that, who is responsible for what… the list goes on. They are one of the most important days of your and your fiancés’ life together!

3 Reasons Why Professional Wedding Photography Is A Necessity

You Need Quality

Quality means so so much. It means technically excellent photographs that will withstand the test of time and will still look great years later. Quality means great posing and perspectives that you’ll love for the rest of your lives. It’s the feeling that you get when your photographer makes you feel like you and your fiancé are their number one priority and the only thing that matters in their moments together is their love story. Quality encompasses so many aspects of your wedding day photos.

You Need Uncle Bob

This is kind of a joke among photographers. “Uncle Bob” is a family member with a camera who wonders why the bride and groom didn’t ask him to photograph their wedding. After all, he has a camera! Some photographers get annoyed at Uncle Bob, but I don’t. I like reminding Uncle Bob that the bride and groom want him to enjoy their wedding! They want him to be present in their story!

Although I’m great friends with my couples, I’ve been hired to photograph their day in a way that a family member simply cannot. Family members need to experience it in a way that I don’t. I’m a professional wedding photographer, who cares deeply about clients, but I am there to do my job and do it well. I remind Uncle Bob of that and now I’m reminding you! You need your family members to be your family members and your closest friends to be your closest friends.

You Need a Professional

This might not seem so obvious. There are so many upcoming businesses in the wedding photography industry. It can be overwhelming to select your perfect wedding photographer! It’s easy to find someone who takes pretty pictures. It’s harder to find a professional wedding photographer that takes pretty and technically correct photographs throughout your entire wedding day even in less than ideal conditions. It’s harder to find a professional that not only cares deeply about their couples but also cares deeply about the product they are delivering. You need someone photographing your wedding that cares about you, knows the ins and outs of the wedding day, understands photography fully, and who is continuously bettering their craft to benefit their couples.

Wedding Photography Isn’t a Luxury

That’s a bold statement! Wedding photography is a necessity. You need your wedding photos displayed around your home to remind you of the commitment you made. You need heirlooms to pass down to your children and their children to tell your story. You need wedding photos to celebrate your marriage! Wedding photography is not a luxury- some wedding photographers, like myself, give a luxury experience, but wedding photography itself is a necessity.

I recently asked the question on an Instagram post of mine, “What’s something you wish you would have invested more in?” Can you guess what the overwhelming majority of the answers said? Photography and videography. Remembering their day was more important than the other areas they could have spent their hard earned money on.

I challenge you to think about this for your own wedding photography! Are you an AY Bride or Groom? You’re in excellent hands! Are you searching for your perfect wedding photographer? Let’s talk about what you’re looking for and if we’d make a great fit. Are we not the perfect fit? I’m dedicated in finding you your wedding photographer because everyone deserves to have memories of their day that reflects their relationship best!

People need to understand how important it is to have a great photographer capturing all the moments in their day to day life! This is just such an amazing post and can’t wait to share!

  2. Amy says:

I totally agree that having a good photographer to capture your wedding day is a necessity! You will look back on this day for years to come and you want the images to be timeless. Great post!

  3. I always stress to my couples the importance of investing in a great photographer, who will capture their day beautifully. After all, once the wedding is said and done, your pictures are the only thing left!

  4. Ally Wasmund says:

Yes! So much yes to this. We went with a photographer for our wedding based on price and we didn’t fully understand how much that would impact us…until years later when we realize we didn’t print any of our photos because the quality wasn’t good. Such a bummer.

  5. Jennifer Mills Blume says:

I agree with everything in your post completely! Allowing ALL of your friends and family to enjoy your wedding day without being behind a lense is both a gift to them and a gift to yourself – how can you create amazing memories with them if they’re working to capture every moment of your day? Not a luxury, definitely a necessity!

  6. Kalpna says:

Very well written post and I agree that wedding photography is a necessity. We unfortunately didn’t have a professional photographer at my wedding and we regret it to this day. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Melissa Hirsch says:

I love what you’re saying, but I very respectfully disagree. I think the entire wedding is a luxury! It’s a wonderful, important event if you choose to have one, which I could not recommend highly enough, but many people simply can’t afford the wedding they want, and that’s OK too! Love your blog, thank you for your perspective!

    • I 100% understand not everyone can afford to have the wedding they want! I’m a way too perfect example of that myself, but even if you go to a courthouse and exchange vows I firmly believe that wedding photography is a necessity! You don’t have to have an elaborate wedding to make it part of your story. You don’t even have to have a wedding for it to be a part of your story. No matter how someone celebrates their love and commitment photos of that season of their lives together is a necessity. Thank you for sharing your view Melissa! I always love hearing what others think 🙂

  8. Meagan says:

This post is so great! I fully agree with how important it Is to hire a professional wedding photographer. Someone who truly knows the ins and outs of the wedding day. Great post.

  9. EJ says:

You make an excellent argument for wedding photography being a necessity . I completely agree with you on all of these points especially Uncle Bob! 🙂
