Tips on what to wear for your Engagement, Anniversary, or Just Because Love Story Session

engagement-session-alicia-yarrish

The sun is slowly but surely starting to come out and before we know it the frost will be gone and it will be Spring! Spring is possibly my favorite season for photos, but in Europe when isn’t a good time for a session? Although the cold months might not be everyones favorite it is certainly beautiful here in Germany! None the less it will be Spring soon, then Summer– lots of amazing sunshine days are ahead of us that are absolutely perfect for your session!

So what should you wear? Don’t despair! Here are some tips to guide you in the right direction, and I am always a phone call away should you find yourself needing more help in deciding on your session attire!

1. Be yourself & be comfortable

This is so important! If you aren’t yourself and comfortable it will show in your photos! You won’t love your photos nearly as much if you are uncomfortable or wearing things you wouldn’t normally sport. Although I want you to be super comfy, be sure that your clothes fit nicely– not too baggy & not too tight. We want your photos to be natural & completely genuinely you. Your outfits should reflect you two as a couple!

2. Get a little fancy

Dig out the heels & a bow tie! Don’t have any upscale clothes? Well you just found yourself the perfect excuse to go shopping! Fun! An elegant pair of heels can really make your session more glamorous. Are you wanting to wear a dress? Cocktail dresses are super fun as well as long flowy dresses. And men– don’t feel left out! There are plenty of ways you can get a little fancy too. Try a vest and bow tie or a pair of suspenders and loafers.

3. Accessorize!

Accessorizing can be so versatile! In the fall you may want to grab a light scarf or break out the adorable mittens in the winter. In the warmer months focus on jewelry or a classic floppy hat. Don’t be afraid to try something new– you just may end up loving it! And ladies, don’t forget a great accessory is a simple manicure! Try to stay in neutral tones for your polish, or if your clothes are neutral try a pop of color, pinks and reds are great.

4. Dress accordingly

To go along with the comfort bit, ensure you are dressed appropriately for the weather. Please don’t wear a strapless dress with no coat in the winter– I will be shivering for you & my heart will hurt. Be ready for rain! You know how it goes in Germany with the rain so always be prepared. Have a cute umbrella and Hunter boots on hand just in case! Embrace the weather.

5. Compliment each others outfits

And no, this does not mean match your outfits. This is something completely different and more powerful. Be on the same page as far as dressiness goes– if you are wearing a drop dead gorgeous ball gown don’t let your love show up in shorts and flip flops. We are out of the 90s, so please no white t-shirts and jeans. There are so many colors that look great together if you prefer colors instead of neutral attire (I love a neutral coordinating outfit!). Coral and navy look great together! Same goes for mint and navy. Navy and black – not so much. What about patterns? Patterns are great if not in excess and if not too crazy.

6. Get your ring cleaned

That rock of yours is crucial to your love story, and I want to be sure to feature it in your photographs. So get that beauty cleaned so you can really show it off! Props to your love for having great taste, now let’s do it justice.

A few more tips

– You can certainly have two outfits! One casual & one dressy is usually a great option. No more than two outfit changes though, please. More than 2 changes and it could really break up the session visually and time-wise.

Plan on having a super fun time (because I promise you will)! Your session will be flirty, intimate, and first and foremost fun!

When in doubt go timeless, beautiful, and classy. Overly trendy outfits may date your photos exponentially and we want you to have these beauties on your wall for the long haul!

– Don’t want to break the bank, but still want to feel couture? Check out resources like Rent the Runway!

Is your pup part of the family? My Juno certainly is! Feel free to bring your pup along, but please be sure someone is around to pup sit or take the fur baby back home. It’s hard to believe, but eventually they become a distraction to your session.

If you have any questions about your upcoming session & what to wear, contact me! Email me, call me, text me– whatever is easiest for you! We will find you and yours outfits you both love!

These are great tips! I did get a good laugh trying to imagine my guy in a vest and bow tie or suspenders and laofers! Hehe He doesn’t do fancy. ????

    • I’m actually thinking about doing a blog post on how to get your man excited about the session! Maybe I should include how to get them excited for ‘fancy’ lol 😉 Honestly though some of the best photos I have are of men being their laid back wardrobe selves! I just happen to love vests and bow ties, haha
